Participation in the National Olympiad for Legal Clinics on client counseling
23-02-2021In the period from 18 to 20 February at the National University "Ostroh Academy" was organized (for counseling clients, and by the Association of Legal Clinics of Ukraine) the National Olympiad of Legal Clinics. The competitions were aimed at deepening the knowledge of higher education students of law faculties, the acquisition of skills and abilities in the advisory functions of legal practice.
Only 11 teams from all over Ukraine got to the final part, including the team of the Legal Clinic "Defense" of the Educational and Scientific Institute № 1 of the National Academy of Internal Affairs. It was presented by higher education students Lyudmila Slyusar and Ivan Kuznetsov.
It should be noted that this Olympiad was held in a foreign language (English) and became a qualifying round for the participation of the Ukrainian team in the international competition for consulting clients named after Brown-Mosten.
The topics of this year's Olympiad were "Human rights", namely: the right to peaceful assembly, freedom of religion and the balance of the right to privacy, non-discrimination.
The form of the competition simulated the process of interviewing and consulting in an office with the participation of two legal practitioners and a client played by a guest actor. During the allotted time, the student counselors had to find out additional information to the short memorandum of the case, which the participants received in advance, establish psychological contact with the client, demonstrate listening and analysis skills, ethical behavior and teamwork.
According to the results of the Olympiad, the team of the Legal Clinic of the School of Law of the Ukrainian Catholic University (Lviv) won the competition.
The judges of the competition noted the coherence of the team of the legal clinic "Defense", its focus on solving client problems and providing assistance, and the prospects for further development.
Olympiad participants expressed gratitude for the assistance in preparing for the event to the Associate Professor of the Department of Constitutional Law and Human Rights of NAIA, Candidate of Law, Tatiana Kulik.
All participants of the National Olympiad received certificates and have gotten unforgettable impressions from participation in the event, as well as motivation to further improve their knowledge and practical skills in legal counseling.
