Last week an initial workshop to develop a police respond course to the threat of theft of ionizing radiation sources during their use, storage or transportation was held on the basis of the Kharkiv National University of Internal Affairs with the support and participation of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, representatives of the Radiological Safety Department of the US Department of Energy and the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine.

The seminar was opened by Hennadii Honcharuk, Deputy Director of the Directorate for Strategic Planning and European Integration of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, Head of the Main Department for Sustainability of the Security Sector and Critical Infrastructure Protection. Jeremy Jamison, Regional Project Manager for the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory of the US Department of Energy, also made an introductory speech.

On behalf of the National Academy of Internal Affairs, the event was attended by Professor of the Department of Tactical Training of the Educational Scientific Institute № 3, Lieutenant Colonel of Police Yurii Davyhora, Head of the Research Laboratory for Forensic Support and Forensic Expertise of the Educational Scientific Institute № 2 Lieutenant Colonel Andrii Patyk and a lecturer of the cycle of general and criminal law disciplines of the Kyiv Center for Primary Police Training of the Educational Scientific Institute № 1 senior lieutenant of the police Mykola Neroda. Representatives of the National Academy of Internal Affairs and other higher education institutions with specific training conditions of the system of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine were trained to develop training courses on relevant topics for further implementation of a single course in the educational process.

The training program included webinars and group work. Due to quarantine restrictions, representatives of the American side joined the seminar through online services.

The participants received certificates, which were handed over by the Rector of Kharkiv National University of Internal Affairs, General of Police of the Third Rank Valerii Sokurenko, and the First Vice-Rector, Police Colonel Dmytro Shvets.
