- Main tasks
A foreign language in the system of professional education, in particular at educational institutions of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, has long gone beyond the general educational discipline. Today, it is considered as one of the components of professional training along with special subjects.
In modern conditions, knowledge of a foreign language is a means of successful professional and scientific activity, and its level of proficiency is one of the indicators of the formation of an individual’s professional culture. In connection with the abovementioned, the issues of determining prognostic tasks regarding the strategy of teaching a foreign language in the training system for law enforcement agencies are particularly burning.
The new concept of teaching foreign languages at the NAIA includes the new orientation of goals, principles, content, methods of teaching a language, assessing the acquired knowledge in accordance with typical tasks and skills of their application in practical activity specified in the educational and qualification characteristics of a professional. Professional, communication-oriented teaching a foreign language is appropriate and methodically justified, it involves forming the ability of cadets, students and post-graduate students to communicate in a foreign language in specific professional, business, scientific spheres and situations. The ultimate goal must be in line with the cadets’ ideas about their future professional activity (subjects of the activity), stimulate the need for studying a foreign language (motivation of the activity) by appropriate measures, reduce the learning activity in a foreign language and the personal purpose to a common denominator (purposefulness of the activity), as well as promote actual awareness of the need to study a foreign language as a guarantee of becoming an educated, cultural, professional, competitive and successful person (awareness of the activity).
Another task of the department when teaching foreign languages is the development of professionally oriented intercultural communicative competence of cadets. This competence is the result of the interaction and complex implementation of a number of competencies, namely, the development of general educational competence, the formation and development of linguistic competence (consisting of lexical, grammatical, semantic, phonological, spelling and orphoepic competence), development of foreign language communicative competence, development of socio-cultural and pragmatic competences. These competences form professional communicative competence of the personality of a cadet (student, post-graduate student), who is able to think constructively and offer original ways of solving various problems, to resist the routine approach to the case, to take direct part in solving important scientific problems and professional tasks, to see and evaluate reality from different angles of view.
Thus, the main purpose of the course of teaching foreign languages is the formation, development and improvement of professionally oriented intercultural communicative competence, which is conditioned by the development of the above-mentioned competences. It serves as an integrative, focused on achieving a practical result in mastering a professional foreign language, as well as on education, upbringing and development of cadets, students and post-graduate students.
